He lost that title to Kiuma Kunioku in December 2001 and won it back in December 2002. Marquardt lost the title to Ricardo Almeida in November 2003 and won it back by defeating Kazuo Misaki in November 2004. He made his UFC debut in August 2005 defeating Ivan Salaverry. Marquardt had the Knockout of the Night when he beat Demian Maia in August 2009 and the Fight of the Night in February 2010 in a loss to Chael Sonnen. He won the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship by defeating Tyron Woodley in July 2012. Marquardt had Performances of the Night over James Te-Huna in Jun 2014 and Tamdan McCrory in October 2016. As of June 2017 his professional MMA record is 35-18-2.
